Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I recognize that schematic from this project: http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~heha/ba ... ex.html.en (yeah, I had the same idea) BTW, that chip is now listed as obsolete.
There's also a version that uses an Atmel chip (link on that same page), although I'm not sure about the performance. I was also looking at converting the Microchip c18 CDC USB to serial demo to run as a virtual parallel port on something like a PIC18F2550, but again, I'm not sure about performance. In both cases, however, you can see from the photos that the first option would be more difficult for the average hobbyist to produce and solder vs the Atmel or PIC option.
