I was thinking that it be easier to create a USB to PP adapter and write an IO.DLL that exports the same functions as the original, but communicates with the USB adapter instead, that way you can still use the same software until someone steps up and writes an open source version or at least one that has plugin support for new devices. I've been playing around with this idea using the Microchip demos and a PIC18F4550 for a few days now and based on that experience, libusb-win32 would be the easiest way to go regardless of what you decide to use as the USB interface device.
